PRE-POSTING BRIEFINGS AND WORKSHOPS 2005

The Services Centre (SERV) will offer mandatory administrative briefings, a number of optional workshops as well as spousal employment workshops for employees and their families who are being posted abroad this year. All the sessions will be held in the Training Room located in SERV (unless otherwise mentioned), in Lester B. Pearson Building, 125 Sussex Drive, Ottawa.

Comprehensive Pre-Posting Administrative Briefing

This two-day briefing is mandatory for employees departing for their first posting. Spouses are encouraged to attend when possible. The following subjects will be addressed: the Foreign Service Directives (FSD), distribution and compensation services, spousal employment abroad, education abroad, culture shock, diplomatic and consular immunities and privileges, security at the mission, critical incident stress management and communications.

Financial Planning

Assessing your financial health and setting personal financial goals are important steps to take prior to leaving on posting. This workshop will present some of the most common elements of sound financial planning and help participants decide which strategies will help them reach their own personal goals.

Wills and Estate Planning

A recommended workshop for anyone leaving on posting, participants will learn about the following topics: why you need a will, probate, the duties of an executor, fees, the role of the lawyer, and estate planning in general.

Taxation and Customs

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have put together a workshop designed for government officials working abroad. It covers programs administered by CRA such as: income tax, customs and the Goods and Services Tax and it is designed to answer your personal questions on the following topics: determination of residency status, spousal income, rental income as well as custom issues.
