Commitment Has Consequences
These images of Canadian involvement in Afghanistan are drawn from a selection of news photographs that appeared in August and September 2006. At the upper right is an outline map of Afghanistan, with a red dot indicating Khandahar where the Canadian troops are based.
On the top left, Chief of the Defense Staff, Lieutenant-General Rick Hillier, talks to members of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry on their return from Afghanistan*. Below them is a file of soldiers on maneuvers+ and, to the right, are three soldiers resting on their vehicle in Panjwai after learning a comrade had been killed in ‘friendly’ fire during Operation Medusa**.
Below these scenes are the hearses lined up on September 6 at Canadian Forces Base Trenton awaiting five coffins of Canadian soldiers killed in southern Afghanistan.++
