Art and Artists

Dear Friends,

As we do every year, the Foreign Service Community Association (FSCA) proudly presents our Art Show.  The artists are drawn from the Foreign Service community, most of whom are associated with the diplomatic service in various forms, others who have worked abroad in other assignments, and from resident diplomatic missions here in Ottawa. Their works range across many subject areas, some quite representational and others of an abstract nature and still others falling in between. Foreign scenes are mixed with the more familiar images of Canada and especially Ottawa. In all, they present a satisfying and optimistic view of the world in which we all live. This year the FSCA is pleased to welcome the participation of members of the diplomatic community from Greece, Romania, Macedonia and Russia.

Throughout the year the Association organizes various social events to provide opportunities for employees and spouses to get to know each other.  The FSCA also lobbies on behalf of the interests of spouses with senior management, and we have had a number of recent successes. There is still a long way to go, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This year we are celebrating the 32nd Anniversary of the FSCA.  Created in 1975 by a group of women who were looking for ways to support each other and better defend their interests, this group laid the foundation for who we are today.

We also wish to thank our sponsors Boyds and Art Ottawa East, whose generosity is always appreciated, and we hope that you will reciprocate by using their services.  I will conclude by quoting Peter Engel: “I believe this is true of every creative art: powerful ideas, simply expressed, are beautiful.”

The presenting artists are pleased to welcome you to this show and invite you to share your thoughts with them and to take away a precious souvenir of your visit

“I concentrate my photographic work on urban and country landscape. It is in nature that I find the greatest inspiration. I strive to discover beauty in what is often unnoticed or overlooked in our environment. What I see is not the object or the scenery, but the light, the color and the texture. Through photography, I translate into print form the mood that the scene evokes.”

Moriarty, Deborah (Oil)

As mainly a landscape painter, I draw my inspiration from actual places that I have traveled to. I take the photograph as a starting point, begin realistically then the landscape in order to capture the pure essence of the place.

I traveled to Alaska a few years ago, going by sea, helicopter and a small plane to cover as much ground (including the Artic Circle) as possible, photographing the wide and extraordinary range of landscapes that Alaska provides. This expedition leads to three solo shows as well as having work in the Varley Museum in Toronto.

After Alaska, I spent two and a half months in Newfoundland. One month was spent as artist in residence. The other part of my time, was spent painting on an out port island. I also traveled around Newfoundland as much as possible.

Being part of the Foreign Service has given me the opportunity to see, photograph and ultimately paint a large part of the world’s landscapes that I otherwise would not have seen.

The work being shown at the FSCA Art Exhibition is part of a second series, I painted of the extraordinary rock called Terra Nova.

I particularly enjoy creating abstract images, using macro photography, as well as making impressionistic or dreamlike images out of montages and multiple exposures. Lie many photographers, I often find interesting photography subjects while traveling.

Sirieix, Estelle (Photography)
